News on the street is a car got stolen. Neighborhood leader lady is walking up the steep incline when I step out and says I need your phone number and she's all familiar so I think she means the people who live here so I'm all I'm housesitting but sure and she says okay follow me so I do since I'm going for a walk up and down hills anyway. We get to the top and there's a cop there and folks sitting out in front of their houses and she gets into a lengthy discussion about whether this guy is the community liaison or just some schmo cop or whatever and turns out all of this is because a lady stuck at home with a newborn baby's car got stolen so she can't go anywhere. Ups the stakes. Anyway I make an excuse like I have a call in a few minutes when I don't but I don't enjoy just standing around after being directed to stand there and not being part of the conversation. I'll help if I can, I say, and I mean it but what kind of nonsense is that? I'll just go out real quick and track down some car thieves for you.
